PSL Info
and the children will weep as the world ends.
PREMISE
Longest Night is a PSL wherein characters are drawn into the world of Rise of the Guardians and changed into myths. After Pitch Black tried to open an ancient magical door, fabled to contain a magical army of creatures called fearlings that Pitch thought he could control, a primordial being of darkness named Kuk was unleashed on the world. Now that the door is open a crack, Kuk seeks to open it all the way and bring darkness into the world, using it as a stepping stone to eventually destroy all other realities. His army of fearlings is going out into the world wreaking havoc and killing adults who can't even see the threat, as well as turning children into more fearlings.
The good myths of the world, such as most of the Guardians, have been captured and held in stasis in magical crystal in Kuk's stronghold just outside the magical door. Kuk feeds off the belief the people in the world have in them to get more powerful. The only myths that remain free are two of the Guardians, Jack Frost and Bunnymund, and many neutral/chaotic or evil myths.
Kuk's influence on the world means reality has become thin, making fear and other forms of belief more powerful. This is manifesting as beings being brought into being because of belief and fictional characters being drawn from worlds where they're real. This means the children are accidentally bringing in characters they fear - who sometimes ally with Kuk or Pitch or act as their own individual evil.
On the flip side, this also means their subconscious minds are pulling in good characters who make them feel safe or that they identify with, ie the characters being brought into the PSL.
ABOUT THE PSL
The game is meant to be a PSL, ie very informal. There will be a cast/contact list, but no apps or AC. Currently, it is closed to the players currently invited in it since a lack of formal modding means it'd be hard to manage more than a handful of people.
Players can do just about anything they want for threads or plots as nothing major is planned for anything other than the main villains. All I ask is that if it's a major thing with Kuk, Pitch Black, or Project: Prometheus and you want to have it be part of the main continuity people adhere to, to put it by me. If you want to just AU it up and do things that aren't counted as part of the main continuity, just mark it AU and do whatever you like.
I (Korel) will be primary mod but info pages and cast/taken will be under communal accounts with a shared password so anyone can help out and update.
GAME SETTINGS AND MECHANISMS
The game takes place in the Rise of the Guardians universe, which is a world much like our own that has many hidden myths and fantasy beings like Santa Clause that are real, fueled by belief of people on the world.
The HQ of the Guardians is currently Santa's Workshop at the North Pole, a place guarded with many magical wards and the belief children have in Santa. The characters can leave the Pole as the resident Nerd Herd has managed to use Dipper's book to cast a spell to make it hard for the fearlings to trace them all, but the Pole is one of the only places that is 100% guaranteed safe.
The workshop has lots of yetis making the toys and silly elves testing them and beautiful creations whizzing around in the air. The elves and yetis are willing to provide anything the characters need to be comfortable. There are lounging areas that have TVs with every bit of media imaginable (including the characters' own) and the yetis can make or procure most things the characters could want, including clothes.
The Pole also has a training gym in the lower levels, set up like a fun sort of obstacle course, with magical fields/obstacles, and mechanical dummies that can act as enemies, to test out and learn their myth powers. (And play in)
The Pole also contains Santa's Sleigh, a souped up jet-bearing thing that goes crazy fast and can carry the whole team if it needs to, and the Yetis can make magical snowglobes that teleport characters anywhere, though these have to be rationed out carefully. These, and the magical tunnels Bunnymund can make in the ground, are the characters' primary means of travel.
Other areas of interest in the world are the The Tooth Palace (currently run by head mini-fairy in charge, Baby Tooth), the Warren (Bunny's domain and the birthplace of spring, the safehold of all life on Earth), the town of Burgess, Pennsylvania (Jack's main haunt and the town where the Guardians' child allies, Jamie Bennett and his friends, live), and Pitch's Lair.
Tooth's Palace and Burgess are places characters can freely go, while the Warren is somewhere they can go with permission from Bunny. Pitch's Lair is hidden away and will occasionally be accessibly via plot.
There is also the magical door where Kuk's fortress is, in a weird twisted up pocket dimension, with magical entrances all over the world. Currently the characters can't find those entrances and can't go there without getting captured.
Hiatuses/Drops
Hiatuses will be handled as characters slingshotting back to their home universes for a time and snapping back to RotG verses by the kids's belief later. Timebendy-ness can make it so little time passes back home when they do or more time can pass if you want to canon update a character.
Drops will be handled by them slingshotting back permanently.
Just give the other players or me a heads up that you're hiatusing or leaving. As this is a PSL and very informal, that'd only mean if you planned to be out of things a very long time or are not joining in the PSL entirely.
There is no AC or App and most events will be kept small and informal. A lot of plots will be handled in a very slow fashion and characters will be split into pairs or small groups to make the PSL slow and easy to keep up with.
Interdimensional Adventures
Due to the fragmenting nature of Rotg-verse falling apart, shards of reality sometimes fall off and land in other dimensions. When this happens the characters will have to retrieve them and return them to Rotg-verse before reality fragments and Kuk breaks into it that much faster.
To do this, the characters will have glowing brands on their hands (or other appendages of your choosing) that they can change the appearance of or hide at will. These brands first appear when characters wake up in Rotg-verse. These brands let them open doors to the dimensions the shards fall in. The characters then must use the brands like compasses to seek out the missing shard. Once they have it they must return it to the door (which stays where they opened it) to return the shard to the proper dimension.
The brands are fairly reliable but sometimes if a shard is very small or something is hiding it, they have to do some detective work in that universe. Sometimes the Man in the Moon can help with this by giving them info about the dimension they're traveling to, especially if it's based on another canon. However, sometimes he can't "see" what's happening in these other worlds enough so the characters are going in blind.
The shards usually look like a random object so characters sometimes have to touch it to sense it's a shard.
The brands also indicate how much time they have left to get the shards (though this can sometimes get fuzzy and unclear) so they know how long they have to return the shard before rotg-verse falls apart and Kuk gets in.
Characters will usually have this whole aspect of the plot explained to them by other Guardians when they first arrive.
FACTIONS AND MAJOR CHARACTERS
Kuk and his Forces
Kuk is a being of primordial evil, and It seeks to turn all of existence into the empty void that is itself. It controls an army of fearlings that wreak havoc on the world, sometimes killing adults that can't see them and changing children into more fearlings.
Any child of any age is susceptible, as long as they are mentally still innocent. To change them, the fearlings must be able to touch them when they're afraid. Children that are not afraid of the fearlings are immune from the transformation but can still be physically harmed by them. The fearlings are damaged by light but are now powerful enough to sometimes operate in daytime, sometimes creating a cloud of disposable fearlings to block out the sun (which are destroyed) while others fight in the darkness below. They are beings that are mostly mindless, but sometimes can come together in a single form that is semi-sentient, capable of speech and dedicated to enacting Kuk's will.
Evil Myths
Due to Kuk thinning reality, characters from fiction that are scary are sometimes pulled into the world by children's unconscious fears (or formed wholecloth out of nothing) such as horror movie villains or urban myths like Slenderman. These beings are sometimes lured in to serve Kuk or Pitch Black, or act as their own individual menace or threat to the world.
Other Myths
Other myths exist in the world. Some are good but in hiding because of Kuk, who would kidnap them to feed off their belief, or secretly enacting some good on the world and trying to avoid capture. There are very few of these myths left free, though.
Others are neutral, such as trickster spirits, or evil. Some of the neutral or evil myths may be bargained with to help in the fight against Kuk, but often at a steep price.
The Guardians
The Guardians are a group of myths that are given special abilities and power by the Man in the Moon. These spirits dedicate their lives to the protection of children and the world they live in, and in between fighting threats to them, they try to nurture certain qualities in them to make their childhoods better so that they also have happy adulthoods.
The Guardians take an oath that binds them to their service:
To guard them with your life, their hopes, their wishes and their dreams,
for they are all that we have, all that we are, and all that we will ever be?
[Guardian states they will.]
Then congratulations, [name], for you are now, and forevermore, a Guardian.
When they take this oath, they gain greater power from the belief of children but it means that if the children stop believing in them, they fade away forever. There are six Guardians: Nicholas St. North (Santa Claus), Toothiana (The Tooth Fairy), The Sandman, Bunnymund (The Easter Bunny) Jack Frost, and Anansi the Spider. All the Guardians besides Jack and Bunnymund have been captured in earlier fights against Kuk, trapped in crystal stasis. This has left Jack and Bunny to protect the new myths dropping into their world and rally those that want to help into fighting against Kuk, to save the universes, and then free the good myths that might be able to help the PCs go home.
New Myths (IE Your PCs)
The characters dropping into the game are fictional characters in RotG world, but real people in other universes. (Everything must be real somewhere and that means they have to be real somewhere and worlds where they're fiction are real somewhere). The Guardians do think there's a chance they were imagined up wholecloth, but this will be unlikely unless players want to play with it.
Powers
Upon entry to the PSL, they will find that they have new powers or their natural powers will have been changed. They will all have innate abilities of resistance to injury, the ability to heal very quickly (including injuries like lost limbs), and slightly increased strength, agility, stamina, and speed. They will also find themselves able to understand, speak, or read any language (other than certain ancient or magical languages). Before they gain believers, they will be invisible to all people. After they gain believers, they'll be visible to all children and invisible to adults unless they make a concentrated effort for adults to see them.
They also need to eat and sleep very little, only ever once in a while, though they can still eat and nap for pleasure. When injured, however, they sometimes crash and need to sleep for some time to recover, especially if it's very severe injury. They do need to breathe but do have the capacity to hold their breath longer than normal humans and their muscles use less oxygen.
With these innate powers there will come other powers appropriate to the character. Players are free to make those up as long as they start somewhat weak and aren't game breaking. They will be allowed to have more powers and have their powers strengthen as the game goes on and they gain more belief from the children.
Characters also have a center, such as hope, fun, dreams, memories, self-expression, or wonder. If characters figure out their center and nurture/protect these qualities in children and play to them as strengths, they will find themselves becoming more powerful. Characters also have the chance to take the Guardian oath, guaranteeing them even more power, but risk being permanently bound to RotG world and never able to go home, and if they lose all believers, they'll fade away, as opposed to just becoming invisible.
Pitch Black and his Forces
Pitch Black aka the Bogeyman is the king of nightmares. He wishes to rule over the world with fear and gain the belief and respect of all children by making them afraid. He is the sworn enemy of the Guardians and seeks to destroy them and everything they hold dear.
He is the one that unleashed Kuk, thinking he could control his fearling army, however the army was only loyal to Kuk. Pitch seeks to turn the current situation to his own advantage to rule over the world with fear, and has been recruiting evil myths and trying to find ways to control the fearlings for himself. However, he also doesn't want Kuk to destroy the world since he lives in it, too. He sometimes cooperates with Kuk, making it seem as if he is cooperating with his plans, but isn't really loyal to It.
Pitch will be a constant complicating factor in the situation between the Guardians and their allies and Kuk.
Project Prometheus
Originally formed out of grassroots networks of myth hunters, this is an international set of governmental organizations dedicated to studying and destroying myths. They are vaguely aware of Kuk and the fearling threat and are trying to understand myths to destroy them, seeing themselves as guardians of humanity. They often collect spells and powerful artifacts, studying them and learning to use them to aid in their cause.
They are very organized but do relay on networks of independent myth hunters throughout the world. One particular independent hunter was in possession of a powerful book of spells and myth lore, created in ancient times to combat myths and updated through the centuries. Recently, that book disappeared from his possession, and after this information was found out by the myth-hunting community, both Project: Prometheus and the grassroots myth-hunting community are searching for it, not knowing that the book has been bound to Dipper Pines.
