Everyone Loves the Sleigh

They'd had a few days to get settled in. In that time, the Yetis and Elves had been nothing but welcoming, making sure the gang had a never-ending supply of treats, cocoa, and eggnog, as well as more wholesome food to nosh on. Even though they had work to do - and seemed to enjoy doing it - the Yetis had been helpful in getting them all settled in, into rooms specially designed to each of their specifications. If anything had a want or need of something, like new clothes, or a new pair of shoes, they'd been quick to provide.

Jack and Bunny had done their part to make the new folks feel welcome, as well, by showing them around and socializing, but they'd been in and out constantly during the last few days. Some of the times they'd come back in, they'd looked a touch on this side of ragged.

True to their word, despite the fact that they'd been busy putting out fires caused by Kuk and Its minions, they had reached out to a few contacts of theirs to see about helping the others get home.

That was why Jack was gathering them all up on the balcony in front of the globe.

"Okay, guys, we have some good news. We managed to get in touch with an ally of ours. We think she can give us more information about what exactly you are. Like...how much you were changed to be like us, how the mechanics of the world have changed to pull you in. It might give us some headway in figuring out how to get you back home. She wants to meet you."

Mami stumbled around Sam upon his discovery---her companions were good shots, that was a good sign! But her fellow newcomer seemed to be having trouble with his powers. She soon danced out of his way and moved to assist Jack again, yelping as a claw hit her from the side---too close.

She conjured a rifle and slammed the blunt end into her attacker, spinning on her heel and flipping the business end toward her opponent.

Boom. That took care of another. Mami kept firing through the pain, always calling out her warnings. She'd realized fairly early that she wasn't quite able to pull 50 rifles at once anymore, so accuracy was especially important with each shot she fired. On a fast-moving target, that was difficult.

But soon there were plenty of holes in wings.

Bunny flung a boomerang directly into the mass that Sam had compressed, the enchantments on the weapon ripping the fearlings into dry smoke.

Far from being shocked or suspicious at Sam's new power, Bunny looked like he approved.

"Good onya mate, think you could give that another go?"

"I'm not that sure how I did it in the first place!" There'd been on demon blood. He knew all too well what that hit felt like. The Yetis and elves hadn't served anything that made him crave it...

His mind finally flashed back to something Katherine had said earlier. That, as myth spirits in this world, they now had powers as well. He hadn't thought much about it, really, but apparently this was what she meant. At least if they had to give him powers, they were powers that didn't hurt him. Not like the visions had.

Sam took a breath and let it out as slowly as he could, trying to summon up what Ruby had taught him about controlling this portion of his old powers. Much as he hated Ruby and what she'd done to him, at least it might come in handy. It didn't come quite as easily this time, but it did come, Sam holding out his arm to push the fearlings back.

They were in danger and they were fighting. The adrenaline was still there, at least.

"Consider it covered. Go!"

Immediately she had a musket swung up to fire anywhere on Jack's trail, her eye narrowed to aim. She readied herself to race off after him, though it'd be difficult without leaving the ground.

That was all right. It had never stopped her before.

Creating an opening was not Bunny's specialty, but he'd found ways. One he reached for as if on ingrained instinct as Jack was overrun - a blue-shelled egg from his harness, decorated with swirling intervals of bright, almost luminescent, yellow.

He'd thrown several other eggs in the fight already, and had more to throw, and there was something about the blue egg gripped in his paw that made him pause before throwing it.

Desperation flashed through his expression as he looked at Jack, then back at the blue-shelled egg, as if it were special enough to warrant not throwing in defense of his friend.

The choice was quick, but clearly not one he made lightly.

He looked at Sam, egg still in hand. Mami was a great shot, and she was doing well, but she was already doing what she could. Sam was holding the fearlings back, leaving him the time he'd needed to almost throw the egg, but he could take those, much more easily than he could make an opening.

Without making nearly as much of a sacrifice, anyway. Not that the new myths would know why, what the egg contained that made it worth the life of his best friend.

"Can you help him?"

There was a shadow of a "please" in his tone.

Sam shifted his attention, looking at Bunny before looking up to catch sight of Jack. "I can try," he replied, turning so that he could reach out that direction as well.

He didn't exactly have a lot of fine motor control. His telekinesis had never been ABOUT needing fine control. Smack the demon around, then use the other bits of his powers to get the demon out of its shell. Now, though, Jack was in the middle of that mass of fearlings and...

It took effort to shake that thought out of his head as Sam did his best to split his concentration, keep the fearlings back behind his original wall and reach to smack them away from Jack. The screeches and giggles were doing well to kick his adrenaline up, giving him more to draw from. He took another breath and threw the TK as best he could, trying to catch and throw the fearlings around Jack away.

Sam nodded. "You're...welcome." Right. Jack, flying. He wasn't that surprised by that. Really.

Of course, that didn't mean that they were finished. He looked up, doing his best to keep the fearlings back as he brought his gun up to take a few shots of his own.

Only to click on empty.

"Fuck," he shouted, pulling back slightly. "I'm out of bullets!" Which meant he could hold them back, but he no longer had a weapon of his own.

Nico overheard that all the way from the sleigh.

"Seriously?!" she shouted back. What had Sam been thinking, not getting into the sleigh to provide cover if he didn't have enough bullets?

Keeping an eye on the building where Molly and Howard had run, Nico pointed her Staff in Sam's direction.

It had been a LONG time since Sam had heard that particular combination of letters. He hadn't been much of a gamer while on the road, but he'd gone through a phase in his first year of college.

It had helped that he'd ended up with friends who were interested in video games. Including one who loved his cheat codes. Which was how Sam had any clue what had just been done.

He wasn't too sure HOW she'd done it, but Sam shot a salute back toward the sleigh before turning back to taking out the fearlings. Still picking his shots, but not as worried now.

After all, that was what the unlimited ammo cheat was for.
