He really had just wanted it all to be a bad dream. That was his first thought as consciousness started to settle in, "Please, let it all have been a bad dream."

He wanted to open his eyes and see Eep and have that be the end of that.

Unfortunately for Guy, it seemed that the universe apparently didn't feel like giving him what he wanted right now. He opened his eyes to a brown ceiling of something that definitely wasn't a lean-to. It seemed to be made of wood but hewn somehow so the bark wasn't visible and very smooth. There were carvings in it in art style Guy had never seen before..

He was very warm and moving his hands made him realize he was covered in some kind of downy furs, ones that seemed to not have any skin attached. He'd never seen an animal skins like it before. It was warm and soft and comfortable and if he hadn't been so unnerved by the alien-ness of it, he might have drifted off again. He was also lying on something softer than the softest bed he'd ever made out of leaves but it was almost too soft.

It was all very strange and so was the ceiling above him and that made it impossible to forget everything that had just happened to him.

Which was why he sat up with a start and a yelp. The air outside the blanket was colder than he used to - tolerable but still cold. Belt was started to wake up next to him, rubbing at his little head with a paw.

"Up up up! Buddy, we've gotta get out of here!" Guy scrambled out of the bed-thing, and fell to the floor in a heap in his panic.

That was how he found out he was attached to the bed-thing with a band around his bare ankle, one that had a long rope attached to the solid wood at the head of it. Belt had one clamped around his waist.

"Come on! It wasn't enough you people had to kidnap me and bring me someplace weird and scary, chase me, toss me up in the air with magic mind powers, and be really, really creepy - so much that I ran in front of some kind of glowy-eyed monster and got hit by it trying to get away from you... Oh no, now, now you're gonna trap me - tie me up - and - "

Guy pulled on the rope, hard, hoping to break the place where it was attache (no go there) and then scrambled for his knife, but it was gone. All his belonging were gone, in fact, including his flint and metal-stone and so were both of his shoes. Even his necklace had been taken away, as if they feared he'd try to strangle someone with it.

It was right then that he realized there was the sound of someone else breathing in the room. With a start, he turned to face the source of it, scrambling back onto the far-too-soft bed.

That's when he saw who it was and his eyes narrowed in annoyance.

"You again."

Scary magic staff girl, this here cave dude is so done with your shit.

With this new situation, Simon didn't mind the cold as much as he expected to, though he still admittedly preferred a warmer environment - one with soil under his feet rather than snow.

He counted it as a small blessing, then, when he found an area in the upper levels of North's Workshop where there were things growing. Food for the yetis, it looked like. There was a setup of some sort where they were magnifying what sun they could get up here to aid the plants' growth.

Simon stooped by the edge of the makeshift field, reaching one hand down to the dirt. He didn't dig around quite as much as he used to, and he likely wouldn't be able to do much of it here, but hey. Small comforts.

After a bit of idle working, a small patch of soil about the size of his open hand was tilled. A bit of it was scooped into his hand to get a closer look, though right before he was about to drop it back where it came from, his palm began to glow a bright green. It was nigh instantaneous - the light left his palm and entered the bit of ground in his hand. The unexpected reaction startled Simon, and caused him to drop it much faster than he had intended, scattering it across the area he'd been poking at. In short order, the glowing bits of earth sprouted up into pastel-petaled flowers.

Boota had been watching from the folds of the hood on Simon's head, and made an excited noise at the development. The little pigmole hopped out, investigating the newly-sprouted plants to confirm that they actually existed, and was followed by Simon's hand gently prodding them.

"Well, I'll be..."

Guy remembered dinner. They'd taken down one of those great hulking beasts they still hadn't thought up a name for, the ones with three horns and neck that was tall enough to reach the tops of trees. He remembered telling stories around the fire and listening to Grug's, which had gotten far more creative since they'd made it to Tomorrow.

Then Guy had gone with a torch to gather some nearby bracken for the fire, a bright light had flashed, and then...

Then he found himself waking up on smooth black stone, lined with yellow lines the same brightness as flowers, his body feeling strangely light.

The sky was darkening and when he looked up -

When he looked up, he almost wished he hadn't. There were strange structures around him, ones that didn't seem even remotely natural, with gaping holes filled with light, staring down at him like eyes. Strange structures, glinting brightly like the blade of his knife loomed overhead, round orbs of glowing light at their ends, casting circles of light on the ground around him.

He stopped the rising scream of horror that was threatening to erupt out of his mouth before it could get too loud, and reached to his belt for his knife, pulling it out with a shaking hand and moving away from the strange structures, the strange...dwellings, maybe? He could see people inside, dressed in strange clothing, the likes of which he'd never seen.

"Where are we? Where are we?!"

Belt let out strangled noises of confusion and fear that made it clear he was just as unsure and just as panicked.

"What is all this?!" One of the nearby long-necked creatures blinked its orb on and light suddenly spilled over them. "AAAGH!"

Guy ran forward around a corner, onto a path paved with black stone, only to find himself in a field of light cast by the horrible eyes of some roaring creature, rushing towards him. It let out a hideous, bloodthirsty screech as it suddenly slowed down, as if it was trying to avoid barreling into him, and he dove forward, rolling out of the way, crashing into some bushes.

Scrambling out of them, after checkingto make sure Belt was okay, he looked around, trying to find his family.

"Eep! Eep!" he cried out, his voice high-pitched with terror. "Grug! Ugga! Thunk! Gran?"

The strange creature started to open, and a person climbed out of it, one that rushed towards him, yelling at him, and Guy started running again, lost in a maze of stone, glowing eyes staring down at him and Belt everywhere he turned.

After Manny had informed them of new myths pulled in from different worlds, Jack had gone out to find them.

The first thing that heralded his return was the weird green guy that suddenly started floating around the North Pole, scanning everything with a handheld computer of some kind. He was wearing strange tights in black and purple, a yellow belt and boots - and now that he wasn't forced to pilot a giant robot - a very futuristic, high tech...

Poncho. Apparently.

It was a hooded one, in golds and yellows, and it looked like it had been put together from all kinds of patchwork and scraps, though the material was definitely not from this earth. For one, it was possibly to fold it down to a very tiny size, which was how he'd managed to pull out it from a small pocket in his belt in the first place.

He had the hood up as if he was trying to use it to block out the world as he floated around scanning everything, eyeing the elves with particular distaste, and pulling annoyed faces at anything that looked remotely magical in nature.

The new myths living at the Pole weren't immune from his attention - in fact, quite a few would find themselves hanging around the Pole, minding their own business, only to have a green alien guy in a poncho float over and start wordlessly shoving a scanner in their face.

The newbies were still learning their powers and when it came down to it, there were still things Jack didn't know about his own. As such, he asked Phil if he could think of any way to give them space to work on their powers.

The end result, slapped together over the course of twenty four hours...

"Wooooow."

...was actually pretty magnificent. A massive space deeper into the foundations of the Pole was where they'd decide to place it, in a massive room even bigger than a football field. Strange mechanical creations, fireproof, and very sturdily made had been built to act as practice dummies.

They were probably powered by some kind of magic, Jack assumed. Phil said there would always be yetis on standby to replace them and other damaged equipment. The walls were apparently enchanted in some way to fold in and out in all different shapes and arrangements to create different obstacles and surfaces to practice acrobatics on.

"Rurglerarble aga baga?"

"'Is it good enough?' Phil, this is great! Even the ones that don't want to fight'll probably need some space to work out how to control their powers. This is nice and flexible."

He didn't want it to seem war oriented, for those that might just want to train to avoid accidentally blowing things up. This was more like a playground, brightly colored and full of fun toys to jump around on.

All the hustle and bustle from the upper levels leading down here was likely to attract the attention of the Pole's recent guests.

After getting Bunny comfortable, replacing his ruined hoodie with yet another provided by the yetis, having a quick, quiet talk with Katherine, and taking a few minutes for a breather himself, Jack finally ventured out into the common area where the others were. He was mostly healed over now, though there were a few scratches on his face that were still fading.

If it seemed like he was in a daze, a strange mix of agitation and apprehension, it was because he was. There was only so much you could get chased and attacked and trapped and battered without it starting to take its toll, and the bickering before the attack hadn't helped with his sense of hope.

All that was left of the Guardians were two of them fighting alone, and a motley crew of strangers they had to babysit - most of whom (rightly) didn't want to be there.

Except... except that motley crew had done some damage out there. Even if Bunny and Jack had still been herded into a trap, the group had held their own and given that they were untrained in their powers and in working together, that was something. And if it weren't for Nico, Bunny would be dead right now.

Some of them wanted to fight. Even the ones who didn't felt they had to. Maybe they could come together on this, stop Kuk, and send everyone home - or whatever places they wanted to go instead.

Right now, though, he expected a few scared people being scared and paranoid at him and he wasn't sure how he'd deal with it if they were.

In various places among the Pole, Zac can be found trying his best to be sneaky - typical ridiculous peering around corners and very-obvious-tiptoeing, as well as rising up from places where he'd dropped down into being a puddle and hiding under something. Or within something.

He was avoiding the yetis - much as he appreciated their trying to be helpful, he really didn't want or need a blanket. Temperature resistance was a great thing, and barring some terribly focused blasts of cold, he wasn't going to freeze up anytime soon.

Though perhaps at some point, this had devolved more into a game of hide-and-seek than any serious incident. Given the focus on hiding from the yetis, however, he didn't really pay much mind to the others, which leads to awkward run-ins. 'Cause a big buff green goo dude trying to Mission Impossible around the North Pole? Kind of sticks out like a sore thumb.

One very long nap later, Bunny was well enough to make a quiet exit. He had a few errands to run - among them, dashing home to eat something not in cookie form.

He returned just as quietly as he'd left. He wasn't being eaten or on fire this time, so it was a better return than his last. Still, something - maybe several things - seemed to be bothering him as he loped off in search of a few people.

The yetis and elves had been extremely welcoming when they arrived back at the Pole. As soon as they shook themselves out of their shock at how battered they'd looked, they'd immediately brought out the blankets, spare clothes, first aid kits, food and drinks. Cocoa was pressed into people's hands whether they wanted it or not.

"Blughbloghughblug?"

"Out of nowhere. In broad daylight, no less," Katherine said to one of the yetis, holding her half-finished cup of hot cocoa in her hands. "It goes without saying that this is very, very bad."

"Ooghughaugh. Blughooghablorgblurgh?"

"Oh, well, that may be because they're still tethered to their worlds to a degree." She looked to the others. "He said someone named Wonder Woman, a Mr. Stark, and some undead fellow that had stayed behind at the Pole disappeared while you were meeting with me. I suppose that supports my hypothesis about the trans-dimensional tethering."

It had been a little while now since they'd returned and there was still no sign of Jack and Bunny. It was obviously bothering Katherine. In between her idle chatter with the yetis, who seemed to regard with her great fondness, she was pacing back and forth through the area that had been made into a "common area" while they'd been away. It was comfortable, full of plush red couches and cushions and tables for them to sit at to eat. Board games in many varieties had been stacked around.

The yetis were on standby, ready to get anything they needed, or show those who hadn't seen the Pole yet around.

"They should be back by now. I don't know why they're not back by now. Maybe the lindworms gave them trouble. Perhaps they had to take shelter in the Warren."

She chugged down her cocoa like someone else might nervously down a shot of whisky and then went for a refill.

Reading, Berkshire, was one of the larger towns in Britain, but this was also because of the myth population living quietly alongside the humans. There were very few that believed in fairies anymore, but some old superstitions had still endured the passing of time, and that was enough for the hobs to get by.

They were used to a quiet life there, and were usually untroubled by the outside world - or even the world of humans they lived side by side with.

At least until all this nonsense with the fearlings started. Everyone in the myth world knew that change was happening and it was a change for the worse rather than the better. When word eventually came that most of the Guardians had been captured by this evil force, by this Kuk, they knew the world was in trouble.

If the Guardians couldn't stand against them, then who could?

This was why, when the sky crack with lightning and opened him and a strange...thing fell down through it, cracking the asphalt where it landed, in the middle of their community's market, their first reaction was fear.

"What is it?"

"I don't know."

"Looks a bit like them human contraptions, it does."

"It can't be human, it fell out of the sky. And it's covered in slime."

"Don't touch it! Everyone stay back!"

The strange metal thing, whatever it was, suddenly sat up, staring at them all with an empty void of a face, before turning in one direction, running forward and smashing the facade of a building like it was nothing more than tissue paper.

"Everyone, clear out, take shelter! Blin, see if you can get find one of the tooth fairies to take a message to the Guardians! There are usually a few about."

"On it!"

The strange metal creature seemed to try to speak to them but the words were in a language alien to them and it sounded hostile.

Then it turned and went back to its rampage. Oddly, it didn't seem to be attacking any of them and all the damage to the buildings was more cosmetic than anything, but there was no telling if that would hold true for long - or if the creature would limit itself to just their settlement. If it laid into the town, with all its crowds of humans and larger buildings...

*"You're all in danger! You need to take shelter immediately!"

They'd had a few days to get settled in. In that time, the Yetis and Elves had been nothing but welcoming, making sure the gang had a never-ending supply of treats, cocoa, and eggnog, as well as more wholesome food to nosh on. Even though they had work to do - and seemed to enjoy doing it - the Yetis had been helpful in getting them all settled in, into rooms specially designed to each of their specifications. If anything had a want or need of something, like new clothes, or a new pair of shoes, they'd been quick to provide.

Jack and Bunny had done their part to make the new folks feel welcome, as well, by showing them around and socializing, but they'd been in and out constantly during the last few days. Some of the times they'd come back in, they'd looked a touch on this side of ragged.

True to their word, despite the fact that they'd been busy putting out fires caused by Kuk and Its minions, they had reached out to a few contacts of theirs to see about helping the others get home.

That was why Jack was gathering them all up on the balcony in front of the globe.

"Okay, guys, we have some good news. We managed to get in touch with an ally of ours. We think she can give us more information about what exactly you are. Like...how much you were changed to be like us, how the mechanics of the world have changed to pull you in. It might give us some headway in figuring out how to get you back home. She wants to meet you."

The flight was fun for Jack.

Which probably meant it wasn't the most fun for Tony.

The Wind wasn't the most gentle way to fly, especially when someone like Jack was riding it - because naturally It assumed Jack could take whatever It could dish out.

Their flight got a little gentler as he came in on his final approach to the tooth palace, though. It had been evening back in Pennsylvania, but here it was early in the day and the first vestiges of morning light were dancing over the mountains. Most of the mountains nearby were a bit more arid but here in this valley, everything was lush and green.

And colorful. True to its name, there was a palace here, one that looked as if it had been ornately carved out of the mountains themselves, painted in hues of pink, green, purple, yellow, and turquoise. There were also countless lattices and towers lined with - or maybe even made entirely of - gold. Some parts of the palace looked like other parts, only inverted, as if the different parts of it had grown up from the stone or down from the rocky ceilings like incredibly ornate stalagmites and stalactites.

Everywhere, there were fairies, little blue things that looked just a little too human to be hummingbirds. They flitted in from every direction and spread out in every direction, the ones coming in bearing teeth in their tiny hands, and the ones flying away carrying little coins tied to their waists with string. Jack and Tony passed by columns full of complicated contraptions that looked almost like a glorified reward system. Mechanical devices extended out when fairies approached, opening up to reveal puzzle boxes - painted with the faces of children - that had half-finished shows of tiny teeth. The fairies put the new teeth they'd collected in the boxes and then they closed up and withdrew back into their columns again, tucked away safe from the world. In exchange for the teeth, coins rolled down out of slots for the fairies to carry away to give to another child.

"We're gonna have to go let the lady in charge know you're here so she doesn't freak out over a strange guy being here. She runs a tight ship."

The ride through the tunnels to the North Pole went much faster than any of them had to have anticipated. They slid along at an astonishing pace, as if the rabbit running ahead of them were somehow pulling them along in his wake, and the journey from Pennsylvania to the North Pole took literally seconds.

Bunny emerged from the tunnel first, leaping onto the carpeted floor of the Globe Room overlooking the workshop, calling for assistance as he emerged.

Multiple hairy arms reached into the tunnel to pull the others out, and huge, hairy creatures with large, expressive eyes set in their shaggy faces crowded around as they helped the newcomers onto the thickly carpeted floor of a vast reception room, overlooking a workshop that was cathedral-like in its grandeur.

Before them, a huge globe, covered with small specks of light, spun slowly. Behind them, a roaring fire burned in a thirty-foot stone fireplace, underneath a portrait of a mountain of a man, an impressive figure in red, alternately fighting savage looking monsters and befriending the same peaceable, hairy creatures that had helped them from the tunnel, and were now looking at them curiously, babbling in a garbled inhuman language.

Bunny was addressing a large figure, a grey furry beast and some others gathered around him. "- so these are the new recruits. New recruits, Phil the Yeti. And . . . the other yetis."

There were far too many to name, but they all looked at the newcomers with wide eyes in their shaggy faces.

A number of things that looked like living hats scuttled around their feet, their little bells jangling. On closer inspection, the little hats were actually garments adorning tiny gremlinlike creatures, with largely blank expressions tinged with varying degrees of wonder and mischief. They gaped with childlike surprise at the newcomers for a moment before some authoritative garbles from the yetis sent them scurrying - and returning with refreshments. Plates of Christmas cookies. Goblets of eggnog. A whole fruitcake.

And all around the vast space, with tall windows showing sweeping arctic landscapes outside, were toys - toys, in various states of production. Yetis constructed and painted them on the tiers lining the workshop. Elves played with them wherever there was space. Many of them flew, circling the globe, wonderous works of art and play unlike any the new Guardians had ever seen - except those who had taken the time, as children, to imagine the wonders that must have come to life in Santa's workshop.

"Welcome to the North Pole, everyone," said Bunny, gesturing at the workshop with a hint of regret. "I'm not the right person to give you the tour, or even the welcome, but ah, maybe we'll get lucky and steal the old blowhard back soon."

"Old blowhard," he called North, but the insult was tinged with affection.

"This place really isn't the same without him."

As far as Jack and Bunny could tell, they'd gathered up all the people they would find tonight. They'd have to sweep by in the coming days just to catch any possible stragglers.

Jack looked somewhat awkward as he stood in front of the group. A leader he was not, and public speaking wasn't something he was used to since being seen by the public was a whole new thing for him.

Still, he gave it his best shot.

"Okay, so most of you have gotten an explanation of who we are and why we think you're here, right? If you have any more questions about that, you can ask 'em. Then we need to talk about where you guys wanna stay. We have a few places in mind that are safe - and trust me, with Kuk's minions running around kidnapping any myths It thinks is a threat, you'll need somewhere safe - but you should have some say in where you live, so we want to see what works best for everyone."

As the summer evening gave way to a cooler summer night, they would all found their way to the little clearing by the pond either by picking their way through town or being led right there by the two Guardians that had found them. One of them even managed to get there in style via piggy-back ride, but then Jack flew off again.

It meant they - and group of strangers - would all meet unsupervised in a strange place, on a strange world, in the midst of a very strange situation.

They likely felt the world shift, a fragmentation of all they thought they knew. It was the way a fictional character might feel if they could feel every page turn in the book they lived in. It was the beginning of a new story and that meant an end to an old one and they would each feel that.

To some it would feel like they had just died. To others, it would feel like they had just been born. To many, it would feel like both at the same time. It all really depended on who they were and what they were leaving behind.

In any case, this world had something New appear in it. After lightning crackled in the evening sky without any storm fueling it, they would find themselves waking up in the streets of a small town called Burgess. It was a perfectly ordinary Pennsylvania town, a place where the modern mixed with the old, American suburbia at its finest, making it all the stranger that something extraordinary would happen somewhere so ordinary.

A tunnel appeared in the wall of North's workshop and two very weary spirits tumbled out of it. Jack didn't even bother to try landing on his feet or flying out gracefully, he just let himself flop across the floor an undignified sprawl of limbs, until he slid to a stop at the feet of Phil the Yeti.

"Arghughblorgblugh?" asked Phil.

"Oh, we won," Jack said lightly. "The kids are safe, no worries there. We just nearly got eaten in the process. Twice."

He looked to the elves, reaching out his staff and poking at one of them.

"Can you guys get Action Grandpa his hot water bottle? And maybe some Bengay. Ugh."

Nowadays, some days he actually felt old. Physically and mentally weary, muscles aching and exhausted. Every time they had a chance to recover from being chew toys, they usually had to be on the move again.

The elves scurried off and Jack flopped over on his back now, gingerly, looking down ruefully at his burned, ruined hoodie. (Third one this month.)

"Bunny, I think I'm going to take an early retirement from this Guardian thing. Do I get a pension?"
